Amoxicillin/Clavulanate potassium (Augmentin)

Description:

  • Penicillins

Indications:

  • Mild to moderate infections

  • Respiratory Tract Infections

  • Urinary Tract Infections

  • Sinusitis

  • Otitis media

Contraindications:

  • None

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category B

  • Use with caution in patients with PCN or cephalosporin allergy (5-10% chance of cross-reactivity)

  • Counsel patient to finish all medication to prevent development of resistance

  • Do not double tabs due to excess clavulanate (Two  250mg tabs are NOT equal to one 500mg tablet)

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • Hypersensitivity

  • Gastrointestinal: nausea, diarrhea

  • Vaginitis  

Dosage:

  • Administered orally (chewable tablets, tablets, powder for oral suspension)

  • Adult:

    • 500mg q12h or 250mg q8h

    • 875mg q12h or 500mg q8h

  • Child:

    • 30mg/kg/day of amoxicillin component in divided doses q12h

    • For oral suspension:  refrigerate, shake well, good for 10 days only
