Dextrose injection USP (5% and 10%)

Category:

Description:

  • Fluid, nutrient replenisher

Indications:

  • ONLY for diluting or dissolving drugs intended for parenteral injections, according to instructions of the manufacturer of the drug to be administered

Contraindications:

  • Incompatibility with drug to be diluted, as listed by the manufacturer of the drug

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category C; not known if fetal harm occurs due to lack of study

  • Consult manufacturer’s instructions for appropriate dilution or volume for dissolving drugs to be injected, including rate of administration

  • Inspect reconstituted (diluted or dissolved) drugs for clarity and freedom from precipitation or discoloration prior to administration

  • Use with caution in diabetic patients

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • fever, local tenderness, abscess, tissue necrosis or infection at injection site

  • venous thrombosis, phlebitits

Dosage:

Administered intravenously

  • The volume of the preparation to be used for diluting or dissolving any drug for injection should follow the manufacturer recommendations of the drug to be administered.

  • These parenterals should be inspected visually for particulate matter and discoloration prior to administration, whenever solution and container permit.
