Fluocinonide (Lidex)

Category:

Glucocorticoid (synthetic)

Description:

Topical, high potency corticosteroid

Indications:

Psoriasis
Eczema, contact dermatitis
Pruritis of corticosteroid responsive dermatoses

Contraindications:

Fungal infections
Use on face, groin, or axilla

Precautions:

Pregnancy category C; unknown if sufficient systemic absorption to produce detectable amounts in breast milk
Viral infections
Bacterial infections
Children

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

SKIN: acne, allergic contact dermatitis, atrophy, burning, dryness, folliculitis, hypertrichosis, hypopigmentation, irritation, itching, miliaria, perioral dermatitis, secondary infection, striae
MISC: systemic absorption of topical corticosteroids has produced reversible HPA axis suppression (more likely with occlusive dressings, prolonged administration, application to large surface areas, liver failure, and in children

Dosage:

Administered topically (cream, ointment, gel, solution)
Adult and Child: TOP apply to affected area 2-3 times daily, rub completely into skin

Special considerations:

Avoid contact with eyes
Do not use on weeping, denuded, or infected areas
Do not put bandages or dressings over treated area unless absolutely necessary
Discontinue if local irritaion or fever develops
