Penicillin V Potassium (Pen-Vee K, Beepen-VK, Veetids)

Description:

  • Penicillin, Natural

Indications:

  • Penicillin-G-sensitive microorganisms, refer to Penicillin G Aqueous monograph

  • Streptococcal infections (mild to moderate severe)

  • Pneumococcal infections (mild to moderately severe)

  • Staphylococcal infections (mild)

  • Fusospirochetosis (Vincent’s infection, mild to moderately severe) of the oropharynx

Contraindications:

  • None

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category B

  • Use with caution in patients with penicillin or cephalosporin allergy (5-10% chance of cross-reactivity)

  • Counsel patient to finish all medication to prevent development of resistance

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • Hypersensitivity

  • Gastrointestinal: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

  • Vaginitis

Dosage:

  • Administered orally (tablets and oral suspension)

  • refer to Penicillin G Aqueous monograph

  • 250mg = 400,000 units

  • For oral suspension:  refrigerate, shake well, good for 14 days only
