Guaifenesin (Humibid LA, Humibid, Robitussin, various)

Description:

  • Mucolytic, expectorant

Indications:

  • Dry, non-productive cough

  • Sinusitis (non-FDA approved)

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category C; excretion into breast milk unknown

  • Recurrent cough

  • Cough associated with fever, rash, persistent headache, excessive secretions

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • CNS: dizziness, drowsiness, headache

  • GI: nausea, stomach pain, vomiting

  • SKIN: rash

Dosage:

Administered orally (capsule, tablet, sprinkle, syrup)

  • Adult:   PO 100-400mg every 4-6 hours or 600mg sustained release every 12 hours, not to exceed 2.4g daily

  • Child:   PO (6-12 years) 100-200mg every 4 hours, not to exceed 1.2g daily; (2-6 years) 50-100mg every 4 hours, not to exceed 600mg daily
