Nitroglycerin Lingual Aerosal (Nitrostat)

Description:

  • Antianginal (organic nitrate)

Indications:

  • Acute angina

  • Angina prophylaxis

Contraindications:

  • Postural hypotension, early MI, closed-angle glaucoma, head trauma, cerebral hemorrhage

  • Increased intracranial pressure, hypotension or uncorrected hypovolemia

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category C; use for angina during pregnancy without fetal harm has been reported

  • Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, children, glaucoma

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • CNS: agitation, apprehension, confusion, dizziness, dyscoordination, insomnia, nightmares, restlessness, vertigo, weakness

  • CV: atrial fibrillation, collapse, crescendo angina, dysrhythmias, postural hypotension, PVC’s, rebound hypertension, retrosternal discomfort, syncope, tachycardia

  • EENT: blurred vision

  • HEME: hemolytic anemia, methemoglobinemia

  • SKIN: Cutaneous vasodilation with flushing, exfoliative dermatitis

 

Dosage:

Administered orally (aerosol)

  • Adult:            

    • TRANSLINGUAL 1-2 sprays under tongue every 3-5 minutes for max of 3 doses in 15 minutes; may also use prophylactically 5-10 minutes prior to activities that provoke angina attack
