Orphenadrine (Norflex, Banflex, Orfro, Orpenate)

Description:

  • Skeletal Muscle Relaxant

Indications:

  • Painful acute musculoskeletal conditions

  • Quinine-resistant leg cramps (non FDA approved)

Contraindications:

  • Glaucoma, pyloric or duodenal obstruction, stenosing peptic ulcer

  • Prostatic hypertrophy, obstruction of bladder neck, cardiospasm, myasthenia gravis

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category C

  • Children, cardiac decompensation

  • Coronary insufficiency, cardiac dysrhythmia

  • Tachycardia, sulfite sensitivity

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • CNS: agitation, confusion, dizziness, drowsiness, hallucinations, headache, lightheadedness, tremor, weakness

  • CV: palpitation, tachycardia, transient syncope

  • EENT: blurred vision, increased ocular tension, pupil dilation

  • GI: constipation, dry mouth, gastric irritation, nausea, vomiting

  • GU: urinary hesitancy, urinary retention

  • HEME: aplastic anemia (rare)

  • SKIN: urticaria and other dermatoses

Dosage:

Administered orally, intramuscularly, intravenously

  • Adult:   PO 100mg 2 times daily; IM/IV 60mg, may repeat every 12 hours as needed
