Potassium Acetate Injection

Description:

Electrolyte

Indications:

Used in large volume IV fluids as a potassium source for hypokalemia in patients with restricted or no oral intake
IV additive when other the patient needs cannot be met by other formulations

Contraindications:

Severe renal insufficiency or adrenal insufficiency

Precautions:

Pregnancy category C
High potassium concentrations may cause death by cardiac depression, arrhythmias or arrest
Digitalized patients
Excess dosing (acetate) may lead to metabolic alkalosis
Infusion monitored by electrocardiograph

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

With toxicity:
- paresthesias of the extremities
- flaccid paralysis
- listlessness
- mental confusion
- weakness and heaviness of the legs
- hypotension, cardiac arrhythmias
- heart block
- prolonged QRS intervals
- cardiac arrest

Dosage:

Administered intravenously only after dilution in a larger volume of fluid.

Dose and rate of administration are dependent upon the individual needs of the patient.
Electrocardiograph and serum potassium should be monitored as a guide to dosage.
Do not administer unless solution is clear. Discard unused portion.
