The PSA is used to screen for prostate cancer, and to follow the effectiveness of treatment of prostate cancer.
Large increases are seen in prostate cancer.
Moderate increases are seen in benign prostatic hypertrophy.
Mild increases are seen following prostate examination, and occasionally in normal individuals.
